Divestment: The Hope For Our Climate

Join Fossil Free UWA in launching their campaign to Divest UWA from fossil fuels.

"We will be joined by three awe-inspiring speakers, all of whom bring different knowledge and expertise to the table. Passion for climate change action is what unites Carmen Lawrence, Jemma Green and Petra Tschakert."

This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from each speaker on their specific areas, with a Question and Answer period. If you’re passionate about our future and not sure how to get involved or if you’re a long-time climate activist this is the perfect event for you.

Climate change is not simply an economic and environmental problem, but an issue of social justice, intergenerational equity, and respect for the natural ecosystems that sustain human society. Australia, although small in population, is one of the largest per capita emitters of greenhouse gases. In addition, we are one of the largest exporters of coal, therefore making us a significant contributor in both direct and indirect emissions.

To be a part of climate action, we need to transition away from coal, oil and gas, and ensure that the bulk of fossil fuels remain in the ground. Divestment is just one avenue for us, as individuals and as a community, to take.

Fossil Free UWA are calling on the University of Western Australia to join the growing number of higher educational institutions that have already committed to divest, including Stanford University, the University of Glasgow, and most recently the University of Warwick in the UK.

Divestment, as a movement, was highly successful in the anti-apartheid campaign. By no longer investing in fossil fuels, an array of opportunities arise in sustainable and ethical industries.

By divesting from fossil fuels, we are ensuring that there is hope for our climate.
