Protecting forests and woodlands

To protect WA's unique forests and woodlands, we are calling on the State Government to:
  • Deliver on the promise to protect over 700,000ha of South West forests by 2033, with comprehensive and well-funded engagement from Noongar peoples, ensuring their subsequent participation in stewardship activities.
  • Establish a network of protected areas in the Northern Jarrah Forests by March 2029, ensuring:
    • Comprehensive engagement with and participation of Noongar peoples in protection and management of the forests
    • Immediate exclusion of high conservation values areas from existing and future mining tenements
    • Strategic Advice from the WA EPA to guide conservation efforts
  • Increase funding for early detection and rapid suppression technology to quickly extinguish bushfires. Fire management in the South West conservation estate must be modern, strategic and risk-based to protect not just human life and property, but also the South West’s incredible biodiversity.
  • Publish live and transparent data on thinning operations, including information about the conditions and scientific evidence guiding these programs, to ensure they genuinely benefit ecosystems.

The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA), in collaboration with key member groups and partners, developed a further set of priorities for environmental reform ahead of the 2025 State Election. These priorities address some of the most imminent threats to our unique and precious nature in WA. Find out more here.
