KEEPING WA NUCLEAR FREE
Right now, WA remains nuclear-free, but without our action that could change forever.
The former Barnett Government, under a modified and simplified assessment process, approved four uranium projects. Mulga Rock - 250km NE Kalgoorlie, Wiluna - 30km south of Wiluna, Yeelirrie - 80km SW of Wiluna and Kintyre in an area excised from the Karlamilyi National Park in the East Pilbara.
The most problematic, complex, costly and damaging aspects of these projects have been left to be dealt with through future processes. These assessments will continue under the current Labor Government, who in a bittersweet move banned all future uranium mines while allowing the four proposed mines to proceed.
The Labor Government were elected on a platform to prevent uranium mining. Mark McGowan said that unless uranium projects already had final approval or were under construction they would not be allowed to proceed under a Labor Government.
We are calling on the new Labor Government not to grant approvals for these unsafe, uneconomic and unwanted uranium mines and to legislate the ban on uranium mining.
