Southwest Western Australia has just suffered the driest summer on record with widespread vegetation death, yet Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) continues to conduct prescribed burns, putting more pressure on already stressed native forests and other ecosystems.

Most prescribed burning is occurring in low priority areas, far from human settlement and provides little protection from bushfires while destroying huge areas of natural heritage. Current research conclusively shows that DBCA’s prescribed burning practices are out of date and destructive and have significant impacts on native species and their habitats.

Off Western Australia’s Kimberley coast lies Scott Reef, one of Australia’s most important and biodiverse coral reefs. It supports more than a thousand species, including reef-building corals and fish, endangered turtles and sea snakes, and migratory whales, including the endangered pygmy blue whale.

Fossil fuel giant Woodside wants to drill more than 50 gas wells around Australia’s magnificent Scott Reef. Not only is this completely unacceptable, posing major risks to marine wildlife, but it will also be a major contributor to Woodside’s proposed Burrup Hub project, that will produce billions of tonnes of emissions.

Western Australia is home to magnificent landscapes, unique wildlife, and globally significant biodiversity. But the nature we love is in serious trouble. WA’s plants, animals, biodiversity and ecosystems are facing increasing threats from climate change, deforestation, fossil fuel expansion, industrialisation and pollution. The places we love are in decline.

There have been recent changes to the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) that weaken the protections that are crucial for safeguarding our environment, including transparency, community participation rights and the EPA’s independence. The current federal nature laws are also woefully inadequate.

It is more important than ever to strengthen our nature laws to protect our environment.

The WA Government has made a commitment to ensure that no further surface water can be taken from the Martuwarra Fitzroy River.  This historic commitment is a direct result of widespread support for protection of the Martuwarra and the 43,000 submissions sent by the Australian public in 2021, calling on the government to abandon plans to extract 300 billion litres of water from the river.

This is a major milestone for the Martuwarra Fitzroy River and it's crucial the government hears from you on why this new commitment is so important for the future of the river.

WA’s South West forests are facing the threat of a massive escalation in mining operations. Ask the WA Parliament to halt the expansion of mining for bauxite in the Northern Jarrah Forest by South32, until a full investigation of the negative environmental, social and greenhouse gas emission impacts already being felt by local communities from current operations has been completed.
