Closed 20 Nov 2024 | Jirndawurrunha | Millstream Aquifer - EPA Referral

Answer

Jirndawurrunha, as it is known to Yindjibarndi People, is a critical ground water source that has been severely depleted since industrialisation in the Pilbara region.

Jirndawurrunha supports vital ecosystems, central to the Yindjibarndi Nation's way of life.

The other name for Jirndawurrunha is the Millstream Aquifer.

Excessive water extraction from the Millstream Aquifer through the Water Corporation, coupled with climate change is impacting the landscape and broader environment.

The Water Corporation has recently made an application which seeks to renew a 6 gigalitre abstraction license from the Millstream Aquifer and increase the take by 50 per cent, to 9 gigalitres.

This application has been referred to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) by the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation.

Now we need your support.

At this initial stage, public comment is sought on whether the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of scrutiny is considered appropriate.

We are asking you to support Yindjibarndi people's and Conservation Council of WA's call for a public environmental review of the application.

Submissions close Wednesday 20 November.
