Alliance for a Clean Environment
The Alliance for a Clean Environment Inc was established in 1996 to oppose a fifth brickworks in the Swan Valley. This campaign was successful with the support of the WA Environmental Defenders Office in the Supreme Court of WA which ruled in the communities favour and ultimately saw the project rejected.
ACE soon became focussed on broader environmental health and justice issues in WA and is now one of WA’s peak Non-Government Organisation (NGO) providing advocacy, advice, referral and support to many communities across WA facing environmental health and justice impacts from a variety of industrial and chemical pollution sources.
ACE was successful in holding WA’s first Contaminated Sites Forum in 1999 and played an instrumental role in bringing about the long awaited Contaminated Sites Act for WA.
ACE held WA’s first Environmental Health Public Forum in 2003 – Working Towards an Environmental Health Plan for WA.
ACE is committed to upholding ‘Community Right to Know’ (as defined under International Human Rights treaties and conventions to which Australia is signatory), on the impacts to civil society and the environment from pollution and chemicals.
ACE works with other national and international NGO’s to highlight the impacts of persistent organic pollutants (POP’s) on the planet and eliminate these burdens for human health and environmental protection.
ACE works on campaigns to reduce the pollution burdens on health and environment in WA from:
- AGVET chemicals – pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and biocides
- Contaminated sites – historical, current and the adverse impacts of remediations
- Industrial pollution – Stack emissions, discharges to the environment, mining products
- Industrial chemicals – consumer and personal care products and their waste residues in air, water and soil
Key campaigns for ACE include the protection of children’s environmental health, air quality and waste.
ACE is a not for profit NGO that relies on volunteers and donations to operate.
