WA’s peak conservation group has strongly backed the EPA’s calls for a review of the WA Government’s climate change policy and action on land clearing in the Authority’s Annual Report for 2017.

Here at CCWA we are always amused by the latest claims made by the chief publicist for the fracking industry Stedman Ellis - also the Chief Operating Officer WA for the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA).

Thanks to the strong community behind the Frack Free Future campaign across the state, there is currently a moratorium on fracking in WA under the McGowan Government. That means no fracking – at least not for the time being while an inquiry is underway.

Environment groups have warned that a proposal for a gas fracking project and gas pipeline in the Kimberley would face intense opposition from community and conservation groups.

What an exciting month! Over the past few weeks, we heard the State Budget for 2017 - 2018, and several other announcements from the State Government - including a ban on single use plastic bags, and a ban on fracking in the South West, Peel, and Perth regions. We also saw Mayors for Peace come together for a world free from nuclear weapons.

I have just returned from a meeting with the Appeals Convenor to discuss CCWA’s appeal against the pollution license for the Ungani oil production facility in the Kimberley.

The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) and the Plastic Free WA alliance have welcomed the confirmation by the McGowan Government that a statewide ban on single use plastic shopping bags will be in place by July 1 2018. This is earlier that previously announced.

Sustainable transport and renewable energy are featured in the McGowan Government’s first budget, which also includes funding for new protected areas in the Kimberley, a substantial Aboriginal Ranger program, and a 10c recycling refund scheme for beverage containers.
