The State’s peak environment group has strongly welcomed the announcement by WA Energy Minister Ben Wyatt that the Muja AB coal fired power station will be closed, while calling for a broader reform of WA’s energy market to phase out coal and expand renewable energy generation.

Western Australia’s peak environment group has strongly welcomed Environment Minister Stephen Dawson’s support for a statewide plastic bag ban, and the rapid introduction of a recycling refund scheme for cans and bottles. The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) has also encouraged Premier Mark McGowan to support a ban on bags. 

Throughout April, community members like you have been working hard to make the environment a priority for the new McGowan Government. From reminding them of their position against unconventional gas and fracking and uranium mining in WA, to planning the rehabilitation of the Beeliar Wetlands and calling for stronger environmental laws, it’s been a month of opportunity and action.

That’s because in the lead up to the WA State election, you were part of an incredible movement of action and support for our environment, wildlife, and communities, and you helped deliver one of the most dramatic changes in leadership in our State's history.

Here are some of your highlights, narrated by the CCWA team, as well as a taste of what’s to come!

The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) and community groups opposed to the Roe 8 Highway have re-stated their call for a Royal Commission into the project, following revelations that Barnett Ministers were advised against clearing at the Beeliar Wetlands prior to work beginning.

WA’s peak conservation group has congratulated Labor Leader Mark McGowan and his team for the election result on Saturday, which was helped by major environmental campaigns and broad community sentiment against the Barnett Government on a range of environmental issues.

On Saturday, the way we vote will have a much bigger impact on our environment and our future than most people realise.

National and state environment groups have described the recent federal conditional approval of the Mulga Rock uranium project in West Australia as irresponsible fast-tracking.

Political candidates in the Western Australian election will be given the opportunity to speak to their environmental policy at a forum to be held on the 2^nd of March at Perth Town Hall.
