The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) will travel to Canberra today as part of a new 50 plus strong alliance to call on the Federal Government to ensure all Australian households - no matter if they rent, live in an apartment or cannot afford the upfront costs - can slash their energy bills for good.
The Energy Bill Savings Plan is the first priority for Renew Australia for All, a new alliance of more than 50 organisations from across faith groups, social services, unions, regional communities and climate and environment organisations, launching in Canberra on September 11. The Conservation Council of WA is a founding member of Renew Australia for All.
Matt Berry, the ‘Better Climate’ Program Manager at the Conservation Council of WA, will travel to Canberra to meet with decision makers and ask for urgent measures to expand access to home energy upgrades, with a $5bn investment to support those hit hardest by the cost of living to access rooftop solar, batteries and energy efficient appliances.
Mr Berry said Better Climate had joined the alliance to show a united front in the reforms and government support we need for the energy transition.
“Our energy future is renewable. The package we are launching today calls for government to invest in household and community energy resilience to ensure no one is left behind in the energy transition we need. Solar, batteries, electric appliances and thermal upgrade will make a big difference for all of us, but they will be life-changing for people living in the regions or remote communities or those on fixed incomes and doing it tough.
“More than 3 million Australian households have already reduced their power bills by installing rooftop solar, saving an average of $1,390 per year. However, renters, apartment dwellers, social housing tenants, and those unable to afford the upfront costs have so far missed out.
“The Energy Bill Savings Plan is seeking to ensure everyone benefits. They are calling for a $5 billion down payment to be followed by a minimum of $50 billion over 10 years to repower Australian homes and communities with rooftop solar, batteries, electric appliances, and thermal improvements.”
