Panellists

We're excited to share with you our panel of diverse and knowledgeable speakers, bringing together a range of expertise from science, policy, culture, law and community advocacy.

Matt Roberts
CCWA Executive Director – MC

Matt is the Executive Director of the Conservation Council of WA, with a background in media, communications and public policy across housing, water and environmental sectors. Matt is committed to keeping nature central in a just, ambitious energy transition, and believes lasting change comes from public policy, not corporate goodwill.

Daniel Garlett
Community and Cultural Leader – Welcome to Country

Daniel is a Whadjuk, Yued and Ballardong man with cultural connections to his 14 clans of the Nyoongar nation. A leading voice and advocate for cultural heritage, social and environmental justice, Daniel has campaigned for over 30 years on climate action, environmental protection, and education through cultural awareness.

Josie Alec
Community and Cultural Leader

Josie is a teacher, artist, singer-songwriter, and Traditional Owner of Murujuga on the Burrup Peninsula. She co-founded Save Our Songlines, which works to protect Songlines, rock art, water, air, and cultural heritage from industrial damage, while passing on lore and culture to future generations. Josie's focus is First Nations-led action to protect Country and maintain a deep connection to place.

Professor Kingsley Dixon OAM
UWA – Botany and Conservation Expert

Kingsley has been named Senior Australian of the Year for WA 2026 for his internationally recognised contribution to native plant conservation. He was the founding Director of Science at Kings Park for over 30 years. He also leads the recently launched Corridors for Carnaby's project, which aims to create connected habitat corridors on public and private land to provide food, water and nesting hollows for black cockatoos.

Professor Rachel Standish
Murdoch University – Ecological Restoration Expert

Rachel is a Professor of Ecology at the Harry Butler Institute Murdoch University who uses science to inform ecological restoration and species conservation. Rachel tends to collaborate with researchers from outside of her discipline, and gets inspired being on Country, and is motivated to find solutions for nature conservation for the benefit of wild species and for people.

Chris Tallentire
Former Labor MP / Environmental Consultant and Business Strategist

Chris was Director of the Conservation Council of WA from 2004 to 2008, and a Labor Member of the WA Parliament from 2008 to 2025. While Chris has great faith in Australian democracy, he is concerned the voice for the environment is being increasingly marginalised.
