In response to the announcement of draft federal domestic gas reservation legislation, the following comments can be attributed to CCWA Fossil Fuels and Climate Program Manager, Gerard Mazza:   

“Western Australia’s existing reservation policy isn’t legislated. It’s an unenforceable policy that relies on multinational corporations acting in good faith — but companies like Woodside have failed to deliver the gas they should provide the domestic market. The federal government are proposing a legislated framework, and there’s no reason for WA not to be included. 

“When given a choice, multinational corporations will always maximise export profits. WA businesses and households need a legislated scheme so they can get a fair go. 
 
“WA is one of the world’s biggest gas producers, but multinational exporters send around 90% of WA's gas overseas, mostly royalty-free.    

“Western Australia needs a strong, enforceable domestic gas reservation scheme and an urgent renewable transition for the sake of our nature and our energy prices. Our state can lower bills for WA homes and businesses with a fair deal from gas exporters and a big push to build clean energy sources like solar and wind. 

“What this debate has made abundantly clear is that WA has more than enough gas, and we don’t need new projects like Woodside’s Browse proposal for gas drilling at Scott Reef.”
