Day 10 - Where to find a glass of water?

It’s Plastic Free July, and I'm challenging myself to find alternatives to single use plastic for an entire month - and to write a daily blog on the most interesting parts of the experience. Today I wanted to find a glass of water at a food court.

I drink a lot of water (that’s a photo of my desk). And when I go out for a meal, I always want a glass of water too - but not every cafe serves it! I know bottled water is ridiculously wasteful, but when I’ve been thirsty and there’s no tap water on offer, I’ve bought it. And I’m sure many people have done the same.

But because I’m doing Plastic Free July, when I couldn’t get a glass of tap water at the food court and my only option was bottled water, I just stayed thirsty.

It doesn’t seem right that if I want to drink water with my meal (and I don’t have a reusable bottle on me), my only option is to pay to pollute the planet. Even one plastic bottle will take hundreds of years to break up into tiny toxic pieces, and will never completely break down.

I think that given the choice, many people would choose tap water over bottled water. By offering free tap water, cafes would reduce bottled water waste - helping everyone to be more responsible, as well as reducing their own rubbish collection costs.

What do you think - should cafes offer free tap water to reduce bottled water waste?
