Day 14 - Plastic free afternoon tea

It’s Plastic Free July, and I'm challenging myself to find alternatives to single use plastic for an entire month - and to write a daily blog on the most interesting parts of the experience. This afternoon I looked for a plastic free afternoon tea.

To avoid plastic takeaway cups and containers, I’ve been dining in a lot more than I used to. I’ve enjoyed the slower pace, and I’m probably benefiting from not running around so much.

Today I visited Gloria Jeans to do the same, but when I looked around, even the dine in customers were drinking out of single use plastic cups.

After I asked, the staff confirmed that they didn’t have any ceramic cups. So I politely let them know that I’d have to go to another cafe, and I went to Coffee Club.

I was only going to take a photo of the tea and teapot, but then my sister suggested that I include my nephew’s banana in the photo too, as it’s a “packaging free snack”.

She’s right, and it also reminds me that in general, the less processed and packaged our food is, the better it is for our health and for the environment. Sometimes it’s simple to find a win win situation - it’s in the produce section in the supermarket.

Do you think Gloria Jeans should introduce ceramic cups for dine in customers?
