This 'Threatened Species Day' wear black and bring a red or black umbrella (or borrow one of ours) as we flock together to create a giant Black Cockatoo formation!
Black Cockatoos are umbrella species for the South West Global Biodiversity Hotspot. They are part of a growing list of more than 2,000 species and ecosystems threatened with extinction across Australia, including 429 plant and 245 animal species in WA.
It's time to defend WA's nature.
We need stronger laws to protect and restore vulnerable natural areas across the state, from the pygmy blue whales of Scott Reef threatened by fossil fuel projects, to the ring-tailed possums of our unique Jarrah Forest threatened by bauxite mining, to the colourful peacock spiders of Brixton Wetland threatened by industry, to our last urban woodland and street trees under threat from uncontrolled development.
Yes, we have a vegetation-positive policy, but habitat loss continues due to mining, housing and climate-driven drought.
Yes, we have a zero-emissions target, but we are the only state with rising emissions.
These emissions are superheating the planet, contributing to WA's hottest, driest summer on record, which killed vegetation across a 1000 km stretch of the South West - our most species-rich area and critical habitat for Black Cockatoos.
Instead of strengthening our weak environmental laws in the face of this climate and extinction crisis, the WA Government is yielding to big corporations, weakening protections, and eroding the independence of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Meanwhile, our federal leaders are lagging on their promise to deliver the Nature Positive Plan within this term of government after lobbying from the big end of town.
We must stand up and raise our voices to ensure nature is prioritised over vested interests!
Join us this Threatened Species Day - raise your voice (and umbrella) and make a difference by calling on our state and federal governments to enact laws that protect and restore nature, bring down emissions and save our threatened species.
