Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Perth Entertainment and Sporting Precinct

This proposal needs to be assessed as a Public Environmental Review for the following reasons:

1. Environment and species at risk

The proposal is located near the Swan River/Derbarl Yerrigan and a nationally important wetland, home to wildlife like waterbirds, fish, and wetland species, with many protected under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

This area is already under threat from activities such as water pollution (industry, street drains, and wastewater); erosion of riverbanks by waves generated by boats; excessive disturbance by humans and dogs to waterbirds; and exotic plants and animals.

It is likely that increasing development at this location will lead to an exacerbation of several of these existing or potential threats to the Swan-Canning Estuary.

2. Additional pollution risk to the Swan River/Derbarl Yerrigan

The site is a former golf course built over landfill, currently used as public green open space. The development will lead to increase stormwater runoff into the Swan River, and remove a vegetation buffer, that currently helps to filter and absorb stormwater pollution.

3. Highlight some of your personal stories or connections with the area, or other concerns such as

  • The direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of the activities and the disturbance of existing wildlife and habitat in areas of proposed construction
  • The current serenity of the riverpark, the time spent along the riverpark, and the benefits to mental health and wellbeing
  • The importance of conserving and creating more public green open spaces and highlighting that the proposal ignores the growing need for more green spaces
  • The importance of preserving buffer zones along the waterway
  • Contamination risks, such as of asbestos, metals, pesticides, hydrocarbons, and pathogens
  • Health concerns from motorsport emissions
  • Excessive noise, vibration, and pollution (including light pollution) impacts
  • Your personal connections with the waterways, lands, and species that live in the area.

Why your views matter

At this stage of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) process, public comment is sought on whether or not the EPA should assess the proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate. Conservation Council of WA has made a submission to the EPA, but we need many diverse voices expressing concern about the environmental impacts and calling for a full Public Environmental Review to ensure these issues are properly considered.
