Join the Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) and Urban Bushland Council (UBC) for our first Environment Matters forum of 2025, as we share an overview of the plight of our cockatoos and hear from our line-up of guest speakers on the all-important question – how do we save the black cockatoos?
What's in store
On Wednesday 12 February, 2025, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, we’ll gather at the State Library Theatre, Boorloo (Perth) for an insightful evening with an expert line-up of guest speakers.
We’ll explore the plight of the three endangered species of Black Cockatoos the Kaarak: Forest Red-Tailed Cockatoo, the Ngolak: Baudin's Black Cockatoo, and the Ngolyenok: Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo. All three are endemic to WA and deeply connected with First Nations culture, spirituality and identity. Despite their profound significance to many people, distressingly, cockatoo numbers have fallen dramatically over the past few decades, and we’re facing the real threat of losing them forever unless something is done to protect the critical habitat cockatoos rely on.
Speakers to be announced soon.
The details
Current laws and recovery plans are failing to protect the cockatoos. Our cockatoos are facing mounting threats driven by habitat loss and fires, worsened by climate change. Across the South West, the expanding exploitation and clearing of forest, woodland and urban bushland are having devastating impacts on these beloved birds.
The decline of these species has a profound impact, because if we cannot protect a species that is highly adaptive and mobile, we cannot protect many other fauna and their habitat either.
This affects all of us, as we are losing our natural environment on all sides.
We need new ways of thinking and working together to save the Black Cockatoo and protect our precious wildlife and biodiversity in a rapidly changing environment.
At Environment Matters we aim to build awareness, inspire action, and create a positive vision for the future.
We hope you can join us for this important event. Your presence will enrich the discussions and contribute to the development of actionable solutions.
