The recent agreement between the Federal Government and the Greens has delivered some positive changes to our national environment laws (EPBC), but crucial risks remain. Join conservation leaders from states and territories across Australia to explore what’s been won, what remains at stake, and what it all means for forests, water, wildlife and community rights.
Some key amendments include:
- stopping the fast-tracking of new coal and gas projects
- removing a long-standing exemption for native forest logging from threatened species protection laws.
- and, for the first time we will (in theory) have a national Environment Protection Agency with legally enforceable standards for threatened species, deforestation and big polluters.
However, the laws hand too much power to the states to approve environmentally destructive projects, and to fast-track mining and land clearing via a streamlined process.
The Bill also hands too much power to the Minister to override departmental and scientific advice, threatening the integrity of environmental protections.
This webinar will give you direct insight into what these laws mean for our landscapes, ecosystems, and communities, and why it’s not time to let our guard down.
This online event will feature senior representatives from state and territory conservation councils who analysed the legislation during the recent Senate Inquiry. They’ll share their assessment of what’s improved, what remains dangerous, and what communities should watch out for now.
The discussion will cover:
- Welcome and context: why this moment matters for Australia’s nature
- Overview of the legal changes, and what they mean on the ground
- Risks and opportunities
- Q&A – a chance to ask presenters what you want to know
