The Perth Canyon is one of Australia’s subsea treasures. Yet, despite being just 50 kilometres or so from Perth, the canyon’s deeper reaches remained largely unknown.
In April 2015 Prof McCulloch led an exploratory research expedition with scientists from UWA, the WA Museum, and the Institute of Marine Sciences in Italy, using the Schmidt Ocean Institutes’ Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Falkor. He will describe how they undertook the first ROV survey of its life and conducted baseline studies of its deep corals and marine habitat, with the aim of determining the likely future impacts of warming and ocean acidification.
Malcolm’s talk will include videos not shown to the public before.
