Back From The Brink

Back from the Brink: A Protection Agenda for Nature is a collective response to a critical moment for Western Australia’s environment.

When the WA Government proposed changes to the Environmental Protection Act in 2024 that prioritised “streamlining” and “efficiency” over environmental protection, conservation groups, academics and campaigners came together to shift the conversation - towards the reforms nature truly needs.

Back from the Brink brings together ideas and expertise from across the environmental movement to map out the transformation needed to protect and restore WA’s biodiversity.

The report outlines key policy recommendations and real-world case studies across four core principles:

  • Strategic decision making
  • Environmental law and process
  • Monitoring, compliance, enforcement and transparency
  • Independence and public participation in decision making

Together, these principles form a roadmap for the reforms needed to pull nature back from the brink - and create a future where ecosystems, communities, and economies can thrive together.

This page hosts the summary report, and will soon include the full report, feature case studies, and an advocacy toolkit to help communities and organisations connect their campaigns with policy solutions.

We see this work as evolving. Your feedback and insights will help shape the project and future editions of Back from the Brink.
