The film, presented by actor Benedict Cumberbatch, explores how humanity can build a safe and thriving future by working with nature, not against it.

The screening at the Windsor Cinema on 19 October will be followed by a panel discussion on what that future means for Western Australia, moderated by Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) Executive Director Matt Roberts.

The panel will feature:

  • Tzeporah Berman, Chair and Founder, Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

  • Bianca McNeair, Acting Co-Chair, National First Peoples Platform on Climate Change

  • Mary Pilkinton, Programs Manager, Climate for Change

Global Citizen Now is being held in Perth from October 18–20, ahead of next month’s COP31 climate talks in Türkiye, and is expected to focus on global access to clean energy.

“The world’s climate leaders are arriving in a state that has fallen behind the rest of the country, and the rest of the world, on renewable energy, and where emissions continue to rise,” said CCWA Executive Director Matt Roberts.

“Meanwhile, our giant fossil fuel export industry is seeking government approval to keep expanding, including at Scott Reef, where Woodside is proposing to drill for more gas exports,” Mr Roberts said.

“WA needs a binding emissions reduction target and to halt approvals for new or expanded fossil fuel projects.

“As How to Live on Earth makes clear, we need to work with nature to protect and restore the world’s climate. We need to rapidly reduce our emissions and stop approving the destruction of our natural world for the short-term economic gains of a few corporations.

“In WA, this means protecting our precious jarrah forests, which store and absorb carbon. It’s also high time we show the strong leadership required to protect WA’s nature for future generations.”

This event is co-hosted by the Conservation Council of WA, Global Citizen, WA Climate Leaders, Solutions for Climate WA and Climate for Change.
